  Parents were George William and Jane Elizabeth. He is baptised Henry Herbert, but for most of his life he calls himself Herbert Henry. At the 1881 Census, he is a step son to Marian Day, a widow, so it is likely that he used the name Herbert sometime around his mother's death, or his father's remarriage, or indeed his father's death.
